Book & The Rose Book & The Rose

Written for the screen and directed by Jeffrey Bemiss, based on a short story by Max Lucado, this 29 minute film may be short, but will live long in your memory. It has garnered many awards, and with good reason. Its fine cinematography (by Thomas Hargis) captures the WW II era, and the acting by everyone has a simplicity and naturalness that make the story believable. "The Book and the Rose" stars Chris Kennedy as John Barnes, a young man who buys a first edition copy of Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, and at first is horrified to find that its former owner, a woman named Sarah, has written along the borders of the pages of the book; but as he begins to read the feelings and insights she expresses, he falls in love with her. John tracks Sarah's address down, and they begin a correspondence, ultimately to find their love is mutual. Before John is scheduled to leave for overseas service, he arranges to meet her, and the ending has a very special and touching twist. As Sarah wrote on one of the pages, "Tell me who you love, and I will tell you who you are." Highly recommended for incurable romantics, and people who believe love can be found where God wants us to find it, no matter how unlikely it may seem.
